Rachel Wilson works as a midwife at Waitakere Hospital and is also Bella Mama’s acupuncturist. Her passion combines midwifery knowledge with traditional Chinese acupuncture to help women through pregnancy, labour and post-natally.
“Pre-birth acupuncture is like having a WOF done before the birth!” Rachel says. It prepares the uterus, helps with correct positioning and descent of the baby, tones your qi and blood. Ideally women come from 36 weeks for weekly visits until the birth. This is especially helpful if your baby is in a posterior position, or if you are going to be induced around 40 weeks for medical reasons.
In 2004 Debra Betts (RN, NDAc) and Sue Lennox (RMBA, MA) made a naturalistic observational study of women receiving acupuncture as part of their antenatal care. Over a 4- month period, 14 midwives recorded the pre-birth acupuncture treatments and birthing outcomes of 169 women in New Zealand. The results revealed that there was an overall 35% reduction in the number of inductions, 31% reduction in the epidural rate, 32% reduction in emergency caesarean delivery and a 9% increase in normal vaginal birth.
Pre-birth acupuncture also helps with imbalances including nausea, headaches, back pain, constipation, fluid retention, sleep disturbances, and stress. In Chinese medicine your mind, body and spirit are all connected so these treatments help your emotional and mental wellbeing, as well as reduce physical symptoms.
Acupuncture can help after the birth of your baby as well. Come into Bella Mama and experience ‘mother roasting,’ a traditional Chinese practice. By applying moxa (a plant that is used as a heat source to stimulate acupuncture points) and heat to important channels it seals up emotional, physical, and spiritual gateways that have been opened during birth.
